Jermain fear for Macca

Ex- Celtic striker Frank McAvennie has revealed he is worried by the arrival of veteran poacher Jermain Defoe at Rangers.

Defoe, 36, penned an 18-month loan agreement with the Ibrox club last week as boss Steven Gerrard upped his side’s title bid.

On the same day, Gers announced the return of former star Steven Davis, also on loan.

But it’s hitman Defoe that has Celtic great McAvennie seriously worried for the Hoops’ title ambitions.

He said: “They are both experienced pros but I admit I am more concerned about Defoe.

“He’s a good striker, he keeps himself fit and he will score goals. Rangers needed somebody to come in.

“They are missing too many chances.

“Alfredo Morelos is their top scorer yet he misses more than he scores.

“Morelos and Defoe can work together. Morelos puts a shift in and is a pest, which is great in a striker.

“If he leaves Defoe up front then just let him do his work in the box.” McAvennie reckons Celtic have also signed a secret weapon in PSG loan star Timothy Weah.

And while he is only 18, McAvennie believes the youngster has a touch of the old school about him.

He said: “Weah reminds me a bit of myself. Brendan Rodgers is wanting to get things over the top. I haven’t seen that for years.

“I watch games and I say: ‘ Look at that space in behind! Why does nobody turn the defence around?’

“With the pace of the game now everybody wants it into feet. Why don’t they just get it over the top?”

Macca also rubbished talk of Parkhead stalwart Scott Brown being past it after a poor showing in last month’s Old Firm derby.

He said: “He has been written off before.

“He had a bad game against Rangers a couple of years ago and he was meant to be finished then yet he came back stronger.

“He never misses training or a game, he’ll be there. He’s a catalyst for the manager.”
