With every action there’s a reaction – and in the social media age, every big moment has its own backlash.

So it was late yesterday that Andy Murray was being criticised for breaking down in tears as he announced his likely retirement.

His critics suggested this was a millionaire athlete lacking perspective.

It’s a false narrative based on a misunderstanding of the man.

What makes Andy great is a willingness to put his body, his heart and his soul on the line for the sport he loves. He loves playing, he loves winning and he loves representing Scotland. When it goes wrong, he’s entitled to express his upset.

His willingness to show emotion and stand up for equality only makes him more three-dimensional and relatable.

Forget the laughable arguments put up for Bobby Charlton, Lewis Hamilton and Bradley Wiggins.

Andy Murray is the greatest British sportsman of all time.
