Alexandra has been nominated for an Oscar for her work on the hit movie starring Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan. But in an exclusive interview with the Sunday Mail, she has admittedd she took a liberty with accuracy too combat the Scottish weather andd landscape. Alexandra, one of the top periodd costume designers in the world, saidd the tough fabric also reflected Maryry Stuart’s strong and unf linchingng personalit­y. The 57-year-old said: “When I readadd the script and realised we would bee shooting in the Highlands of Scotland,ndd, I knew I needed a hard-wearing fabricricc that would stand up to being draggededd through mud and rivers and acrossss water-sodden hillsides. “I instantly thought of denimm which, although historical lyy inaccurate, made perfect sensee both practicall­y and artistical­ly.y. “I ended up using it in nearlyy all of Queen Mary’s 40 costumes,s, many of Queen Elizabeth’s andd most of the men’s breeches. “They didn’t have dr y cleaners back in Elizabetha­nn times and I wanted the clothess to feel lived in. I wanted thee dirt in the pattern to be part of the decoration.
