He lasted just four months in the job, however, before Leeds appointed Marcelo Bielsa as his replacement.
But Heckingbottom is renowned for nurturing young talent and brought through the likes of Alfie Mawson – who was sold to Swansea for £15million – at Oakwell.
Heckingbottom is keen on the Hibs job and he is under consideration by chairman Rod Petrie and chief executive Leeann Dempster as they look for a successor to Lennon.
The former Celtic boss led Hibs back to the top flight and guided them to a fourth-place place finish in their first season back last term.
But he was suspended by the club last weekend before he and assistant Garry Parker left Hibs by mutual consent during the week.
Paul Heckingbottom has emerged as a leading candidate to replace Neil Lennon as Hibs boss.
