A huge section of the bridge is being demolished this weekend ahead of its reconstruction.

London Shard architect Renzo Piano, who is to direct the building of the new bridge, said it will last for 2000 years.

But families of those who lost their lives say they cannot bear to watch the work.

Egle Possetti, 53, whose sister Claudia, her husband Andrea, and children Camilla, 16, and Manuele, 12, were killed, said: “For us, seeing this structure broken in two every time we come is really terrible. And to think underneath 43 people lost their lives and apart from anything else, almost all of them were young people.” A 200-metre-long section of the bridge gave way in busy lunchtime traffic, sending dozens of vehicles into free fall.
