Probe the tag thugs EVERY TIME they kill

Call for automatic inquiries on reoffenders

- John Ferguson Political Editor

The family of a murdered dad of three have called for mandatory inquiries when tagged convicts go on to kill.

Craig McClelland, 31, was stabbed to death by James Wright, 25, in 2017 after the thug – who o had 16 previous convictions – went on the run while on home detention.

Craig’ sd ad Michael and partner Stacey are furious s that Justice Secretary y Humza Yousaf has s refused to order an n official probe into to police and prison service failings in the case. The have called for a fatal accident inquiry to be automatically triggered so families aren’t left in limbo without answers.

Michael said: “The Justice Secretary is blocking a public inquiry for no good reason.”

The family’s demands are being backed by Labour MSP Neil Bibby, who is seeking to amend new legislation already being considered by the Scottish Parliament to improve the management of offenders.

Bibby said: “There would be no question of ordering an inquiry if a prisoner were to kill another behind bars.

“It should be mandatory that an independent inquiry is triggered when a prisoner causes a death while out on a tag.”

Wright stabbed Craig, from Paisley, to death in July 2017.

A Scottish Government spokesperson said: “If Mr Bibby brings forward specific proposals and evidence it wi l l be for Parliament to consider these.”
