Gat better or you will get a battering

Wales head coach Warren Gatland ordered his side to shape up or face a hammering when they face England.

A much-changed Wales side equalled their record run of 11 successive Test wins with an unconvincing victory in Rome.

Gatland made 10 changes from the team that beat France and tries from Josh Adams and Owen Watkin and 14 points from Dan Biggar sealed victory.

Italy responded with tries through Braam Steyn and Edoardo Padovani.

Gatland said: “There are lots of things we need to improve on for England. We didn’t have enough tempo at line-out time and Italy were closing the space down pretty quickly.

“If we play like that against England, it could be embarrassing, but we won’t play like that.

“There were a few guys out there who hadn’t played a lot of rugby so we weren’t as tight in the front five as we would have liked. We made those changes because we are trying to look ahead to the World Cup.”

Wales will break their record set in 1910 if they beat England in Cardiff on 23 February.

Skipper Jonathan Davies said: “I think there was a lot of frustration in the performance and that accuracy to turn pressure into points was what we lacked.

“We have come to a difficult place to play rugby and got a result.

“We expected to be smarter and cleaner with the ball but it was great to show the depth of the squad.”
