Tunisia and Egypt are making comeback, too

Scots had turned their backs on resorts such as Bodrum, Marmaris and Antalya over the last four years after a series of terrorist attacks and the war in neighbouri­ng Syria.

That led to the rise of Isis but the terror group was driven out of Syria last year, reassuring tourists over safety.

Travel agents say there has been a resurgence this s umme r , w i t h book ings up by about 30 per cent on last year.

Duncan Wilson, CEO of Stewar t Travel , said low prices and quality accommodat­ion are driving factors.

He said: “Turkey is seeing the fastest growth of all destinatio­ns.

“Places like Majorca and Tenerife are competing against Turkey for Scottish customers.

The booming Turkish tourism trade really fell apart in 2016 after 16 terrorist attacks killed hundreds of people.

Then a failed coup in July that year saw scores of British tourists stranded in Turkey and those who wanted to cancel their trips were left out of pocket.

But increased stability in the region and uncertaint­y over Brexit means Scots have been increasing­ly looking outside the EU for summer holidays.

He added: “People have left it later to book their holidays and they are looking to Turkey and getting good deals. All-inclusive is continuing to be one of the core requiremen­ts for Scottish customers who want to budget.”

Industry body ABTA says that while Spain continues to be the No1 holiday destinatio­n for Scots, the growth in demand for Turkey is the stand-out trend for family holidays in 2019.

A spokesman said bookings for this summer through ABTA members are up by more than a third.

He said: “There has been a distinct shi f t f rom west Mediterran­ean countries, such as Spain and Portugal, where bookings are down year on year, and the reason for that is the increased demand for the east Mediterran­ean.
