Megan shuts up Donald, next it’s Piers and English TOP TRUMP

- Martin Cameron

Megan Rapinoe has already silenced big-mouth Donald Trump with her heroics at the World Cup.

Now the American star is aiming to shut up Piers Morgan and the England fans who are giving Football’s Coming Home yet another airing.

The spotlight was on Rapinoe, an outspoken advocate of gay rights, ahead of Friday’s quarter-final with France after footage of her emerged which inspired outrage in the Oval Office.

When asked if she would be paying US President Trump a visit with her team-mates if they went on to lift the trophy, Rapinoe replied: “I’m not going to the f***ing White House.”

That was like waving a red rag at the president and he was predictably bul lish in his response, tweeting: “Megan should WIN first before she TALKS! Finish the job!”

Cue a match-winning double from the 33-year- old, who admitted it was symbolic that her performance came during Pride month.

She said: “Go gays! You can’t win a championship without gays on your team – it’s never been done before. That’s science, right there!

“I’m motivated by people who are fighting for the same things. I take more energy from that than from trying to prove anyone wrong.

“But to be gay and fabulous, during Pride month at the World Cup, is nice.”

After Pride comes a clash with the Lionesses as America gear up for Tuesday’s semi-final with England.

That caused TV presenter Morgan to take another pop at Rapinoe, urging Phil Neville’s side to dent her “stupendous ego”.

And while she would no doubt love to silence yet another windbag, the striker is paying her on-field opponents the utmost respect. England crushed Norway 3- 0 in their quarter-final and Rapinoe said: “They had a totally dominating performance, they should absolutely feel confident.

“They’re in great form right now and are one of the biggest teams in the game.”

US coach Jill Ellis is also braced for another closely-fought contest against a side they drew 2-2 with when they met in the She Believes Cup in March.

She said: “They’ve a lot of talented players, their front line and obviously the striker El len White is hot right now.

“They’re a good team front to back, with a lot of exper ience and a lot of really good players, so it’s going to be a good match-up.” Ellis expects Rapinoe to thrive in Tuesday’s big game as she looks to add to her five goals, which sees her alongside team-mate Alex Morgan and England’s White as joint leading scorer for the tournament.

She added: “Megan’s a big personality both on and off the pitch and she honestly thrives in these moments.

“There’s a never-say-die attitude, she’s a big-time player and the bigger the stage the more she’s going to respond.”
