Robbie’s ready for his rivals

-

Robbie Neilson admits he felt cheated that he never managed to sample a red- hot Dundee derby as a player.

He reckons the prospect of managing Dundee United in four cracking clashes this season will help make up for it.

Neilson starred for the Terrors in season 2011-2012 but never faced the Dark Blues, who were stuck in the Championship while United were in the top flight.

The city rivalry is back on the agenda in this campaign after Dundee’s demotion from the Premier League last season.

Neilson is relishing the return of the eagerly-awaited derbies with the first set for August 31 at Tannadice when the city foes will go head-to-head in front of the TV cameras.

The Tannadice gaffer can’t wait to experience the unique a tmos phere w hen h i s Championship hopefuls get to lock horns withJames McPake’s new-look Dundee outfit.

Neilson, who will hope to conclude the signing of Ayr United goal machine Lawrence Shankland this week, said: “I never actual ly played in a Dundee derby.

“Of course, I would have loved to have been part of such an important fixture.

“They are obviously special fixtures. I have watched plenty on television at both Tannadice and Dens.

“We’re looking at four full houses. It will be fantastic for the city and brilliant for the players as they will be screened live. Personally, I’m looking forward to them now.

“Both teams have three games to build up for it before going into the first derby at the end of August.

“So it gives us both a chance to get some momentum going.”

Nei lson is a lso on the lookout for more recruits after tabling a deal for Shankland.

He said: “They would have to be boys who will bring in more quality and improve the squad as opposed to just filling it up.”
