Band deal hits bum note

-

I hired a band via an agency for a 60th birthday party but we had to change the date due to illness. Now the band can’t make it as they have a prior engagement. I’d booked months in advance but only half of our £200 deposit has been returned. Can I insist on a full refund? Check the terms of the booking via the agent. I’d doubt you would receive the full deposit back if the band has kept the date free and turned down other work as a result. Speak to the agent and negotiate. The mum of two panicked when she realised half a million of the firm’s tumble dryers were to be recalled by the Government as they posed a potential fire risk.

Yet four engineers failed to pinpoint a problem with the wiring of the Hotpoint-branded model.

It was only when a fifth pulled the appliance out to replace it that he discovered there had been a fire.

Nicole, 32, a mum to Freya, six, and one-year- old Finley, said: “I was very shaken and upset. It still stresses me out. “The whole house could have gone up and my kids’ bedrooms are right above the kitchen. It doesn’t bear thinking about.”

Nicole, a nurse, and her road worker husband Matthew, 35, ordered the machine online from Currys in August.

The £ 448.99 cost included installation and it was delivered and fitted on September 8.

Nicole, of Motherwell, first noticed a burning smell in April.

She said: “Currys advised me to contact Whirlpool and an engineer was dispatched. But he couldn’t f ind a fault. He replaced a door seal in case that was the problem.”

She called again when the burning smell prevailed.

Nicole said: “By this time, I was paranoid that the machine was going to go up in flames.

“I’d stopped using it and was closing every door in the house at night.”

A second engineer claimed the door seal had been fitted too tightly and adjusted it. But Nicole said: “There was still a smell. A third guy came out and was supposed to have carried out a full fire safety check and no fault was found. Yet the next time I put the machine on, all my downstairs sockets tripped.”

Nicole contacted Whirlpool again. A further engineer visited and arranged for the machine to be replaced.

But she said: “When Whirlpool came to install the new model and pulled out the old one, they noticed there had been a fire behind the socket. It’s an integrated appliance so was wired in by Currys. I trusted them. I’m furious the wiring issue was not spotted.”

The machine was later replaced. Whirlpool would not comment on individual cases but said: “The safety of consumers is our priority and we investigate all incidents.”

Currys said: “The installation was by a fully trained team. We always follow manufacturers’ guidelines and install in line with latest standards and regulative requirements. We would like Mrs Brown’s electrician’s report so we can investigate further and agree an appropriate resolution.”
