Murray hoping for Saints reunion with Stevie but only thing tidy is his finishing

-

Murray Davidson is desperate for Stevie May to re-join St Johnstone – as long as he lives with someone else.

Saints have opened talks with Aberdeen about bringing the 26-year-old hitman back to McDiarmid Park and boss Tommy Wright has confirmed discussions remain ongoing.

Midfield star Davidson knows May better than most on and off the pitch.

And while he thinks the striker could help Saints hoover up points on the field, he’s not so sure about having him back as a domestic buddy.

Davidson said: “I played with him, I also lived with him for a while. We were flat-mates for a year and trust me – he wasn’t the tidiest!

“But we know his qualities as a scorer and I’m sure the club will be desperate to get him in. He’ll be a massive acquisition because he’s a natural goal scorer and he would add that to most teams in the Premiership.

“He’s a really nice guy and the one thing about Stevie is that he’s so confident in his own ability. He always backs himself. It would be massive for the club.”

Saints ended their pre-season stint in Northern Ireland with a comfortable victory against Linfield.

And after the game boss Wright admitted that he will not be making moves for trialists Danzell Gravenberch and Tyler Garratt but instead focusing all his attentions on May. He added: “In terms of defenders we will not be looking to bring anyone else in.

“With regards to Stevie, if it’s possible we’d sign him. There’s a long way to go.”

Saints got off to the worst possible start – losing a goal just two minutes into their clash with the Northern Irish champions.

Zander Clark was too cute with a pass wide to Steven Anderson and Shayne Lavery was able to intercept and finish.

Trialist striker Alex Jones then had a penalty saved before Danny Swanson floated a shot from a tight angle over the keeper for a deserved equaliser. Saints made eight changes at the break and dominated the second hal f as Callum Hendry powered home a header to put them 2-1 ahead.

Ali McCann then scored his first goal for the club 10 minutes from time with a cool finish from eight yards.

Saints conceded another sloppy goal in 84 minutes when Lorcan Forde cashed in on two defensive errors.

But new skipper Jason Kerr restored the two-goal advantage with a header in 86 minutes.

Boss Wright added: “It’s been a great week with all the players getting 45 minutes and we looked sharper today.”
