This is a game of two Alfs

Rangers legend Mark Hateley says Al fredo Morelos can channel his temper – after he learned to do the same in Italy.

Hateley saw red for a headbutt in his first home game with AC Milan before his veteran Swedish coach took him under his wing.

He said: “You find a way to channel the aggression in a different direction.

“I’m the best example I know of that. I got sent off in my first game at the San Siro for Milan, in the Coppa Italia, for head- butting Brescia’s centre-half!

“I was 21, similar to Alfredo. You do daft things when you’re young.

“Our manager Ni ls Liedholm helped me discover a better way.

“He took me to one side, explained things to me and taught me how to play as a European striker. He was a great tutor, teaching me how not to lash out but to use my energy to protect the ball more and focus on denying the opponent.

“I’ve watched Steven Gerrard with Alfredo – he’s all over him.

“He knows he can’t take all the fire away but has to find a way of channelling what Alfredo has in a way that keeps him on the pitch and keeps him effective.”

Hateley believes Rangers are in great shape for the season ahead. He said: “Steven had a great first season and he’s focusing on the quality that will lift this group to the next level.

“I’m excited with what we’ve seen this summer.”

Rangers’ pre-season continues today with a friendly against Karl Robinson’s Oxford United.

Tickets are still available for the clash, from the Copland Stand (£10 adults, £5 juniors/concessions).

U’s gaffer Robinson said: “This is a fantastic chance for us to experience playing at a big stadium against a big club.”
