Hoppy happy as away day wins give Ton a boost

- Arbroath..........................1 Morton.............................2

Morton boss David Hopkin believes his side have finally turned a corner in their Championship survival bid after back-to-back away wins.

Early goals from John Sutton and Luca Colville put the Greenock side on top, then Scott Stewart pulled one back with a header.

Hopkin said: “That’s a big win for us at an extremely tough venue.

“We’ve not had much luck in a lot of games but this time we showed another side of our game, character, and that really pleases me. We dug in for a result and the league looks very different.

“We’ve now won twice in a row away from home and are playing with more confidence.

“There is a bunch of teams on 25 points and we are only three behind them with a game in hand so this could be a turning point.”

Sutton rose above the home defence to loop a header over

Derek Gaston in 13 minutes. Ton doubled the lead seven minutes later when Robbie Muirhead squared for Colville to sweep home from close range.

Arbroath replied almost instantly as Stewart stepped off his marker to meet a Michael McKenna cross and bullet home a header from six yards to make it 2-1.McKenna then headed wide for Arbroath with Bobby Linn blasting a low 25-yard free-kick off the wall.

Morton came close to extending their lead as Nicky Cadden’s freekick was turned over by Gaston.

But Morton held on to move to within three points of Arbroath.

Arbroath No.2 Ian Campbell said: “It’s a tough defeat but we will take it on the chin.

“Every game in this league is competitive. Every single one is a battle. But we are here on merit. We deserve to be right in the mix and we are up for the challenge.”
