MASKED SINGER SHOW SET TO RETURN FOR NEW SERIES

- ■ Nick Dorman

Wacky contest The Masked Singer is set to return for a second series.

Executives at ITV have secured a deal with production company Bandicoot to bring the show back to screens next year.

A telly insider said: “After some high-level meetings everything was agreed and now a second series is definitely happening.

“Everyone at ITV is thrilled The Masked Singer will be back.”

The Masked Singer has become a ratings sensation since launching earlier this month.

It has been pulling in up to seven million viewers to become the biggest show on Saturday nights.

Within just a few weeks, it became so popular the BBC was forced to shift The Greatest Dancer to an earlier slot to avoid a direct clash.

The Masked Singer is also outperforming established shows including The Voice and Doctor Who.

An ITV source said: “It was a no-brainer to go for a second series. The show has been a massive hit.

“It’s has the whole country talking. People either love it or hate it but everyone seems to have an opinion on it.”

The show sees celebrities perform in costumes so no one can see who they are.

It’s then up to a panel of detectives and viewers watching at home to work out who’s in the line- up. Contestants are then unmasked as they’re eliminated from the contest.

So far, that’s included footie legend Teddy Sheringham and soap actress Patsy Palmer.

The show first aired in South Korea in 2015 with the title King of Mask Singer.

Since then the format has been sold to more than 20 countries.

It is understood that producers are keen to keep panellists Rita Ora, Ken Jeong, Jonathan Ross and Davina McCall.

The current series continues next Saturday on STV.
