Quique feeling peaky after first Barca defeat

Quique Setien suffered his first loss as Barcelona boss as Valencia secured a 2-0 victory at the Mestalla to preserve their unbeaten home record in La Liga this season.

Marc-Andre Ter Stegen produced a string of top saves to keep Barcelona in the game in the first half, denying Maxi Gomez from the penalty spot after Gerard Pique had brought down Jose Gaya in the area, before tipping another Gomez shot on to the bar.

But Valencia took the game away from them after the break, drawing first blood three minutes into the second half thanks to a Jordi Alba own goal, before dangerman Gomez made the points safe by netting 13 minutes from time.

Barcelona remain top of the table on goal difference but could be overtaken when second-placed Real Madrid take on Valladolid today.

Setien (right) was gutted after his third game in charge. He said: “In the first halff we were frankly poor.”

In Germany, Bayern rn Munich fired an ominous nous warning to the rest of the Bundesliga.

They demolished fifth-placed Schalke 5-0 to close the gap on leaders RB Leipzig to one point. Polish striker Robert Lewandowsk­i set the Bavarians on their way by scoring his 21st league goal of the season in the sixth minute. Then, after they had two goals disallowed for offside, Thomas Muller added the second just before half-time.

Leon Goretzka scored a brilliantl­y improvised third goal in the 50th minute before Thiago and Serge Gnabry added two more as Bayern completed their fifth successive league win.

Leipzig were beaten 2-0 away to Eintracht Frankfurt, with Almamy Toure and Filip Kostic doing the damage in the second half.

Borussia Monchengla­dbach are two points off the leaders in third spot after a 3-1 win ov over Mainz.

Robin Quaison put Mainz ahead in the 1 12th minute but a double from A Alassane Plea had them on the back b foot.

Florian Neuhaus made sure the points were going home with Borussia when he struck stru the clincher with w just two minutes left.
