SUPER BRO
Charity worker’s joy as big brother books £20k NFL tickets after missing out in 2012
NFL fanatics Fraser and Steve Bedwell missed out on what they thought was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to watch their team in the Super Bowl thanks to a new family arrival in 2012.
But the San Francisco 49ers have now returned to the big game – and the Scots brothers have honoured an eight-year promise to make it this time around.
More than £ 20,000 later, the pair have jetted out to Florida to watch their favourites take on the Kansas City Chiefs tonight. Steve, 48, who moved to New York a decade ago, snapped up the £ 10,000 tickets for the extravaganza in Miami. Char it y worker Fraser, 42 , of Glasgow, said: “We’ve talked about it ever since the 49ers were last in the Super Bowl. We thought about trying to go then but my daughter Libby had just been born and it was a non-starter. But I wasn’t really sure if Steve was joking.
“Even when we were FaceTiming after the Niners won the NFC
Championship, I thought it was just a bit of fun. So I couldn’t quite believe it when he called and said, ‘Get yourself on a plane.’
“You talk about once-in-a-lifetime experiences and going to a Super Bowl is something else.” Steve got them both hooked on San Francisco when gridiron first came on Channel 4 in the 80s.
He said: “I’d no idea what was going on. I thought a running back was someone going backwards. But I wanted to pick a team.
“I saw Dallas with Larry Hagman on TV and they showed the Cowboys’ stadium in the opening credits and I thought, ‘I can’t pick them.’
“I couldn’t do the Patriots because can you imagine a Scot supporting New England? So I chose the 49ers.”
It led to a life-long love affair that will see the siblings don their jerseys and kilts at the Hard Rock Stadium for tonight’s big game. Kansas City are the bookies’ favourites.
Steve added: “Normally I wouldn’t consider paying that kind of money for one game. But a promise is a promise and it’s family.”
