Host and Scot Iain like ships in night despite work on show

“We don’t even stay in the same hotel room because sometimes I’m working until 4am and he’s finished at 9pm.”

Laura said the offer to take over as host of the popular show from Flack was bitterswee­t as the pair were friends.

But it was while she was wait ing to reach out to Flack that Laura received a message from the former host giving her blessing.

Laura said: “It was such a weird one. I was really excited but at the same time I couldn’t be overexcite­d because it was a s**t situation.

“While I was waiting to find out if it was OK for me to message her, she messaged me, saying, ‘ I don’t know if you’ll get it, but I hope you do,’ so that was really nice.”

Whitmore admitted that before landing the hosting role, she had a different perspectiv­e of the contestant­s on the popular dating show.

But since getting to know the island hopefuls, she has changed her mind.

Laura said: “Before I’d ever watched Love Island, I probably prejudged the girls.

“But getting to know the islanders you’re, like, ‘Oh, you’re a real person, you’ve got banter.’

“It’s OK to care about how you look, you can still be smart.”

Af ter f i lming in South Africa, Laura travels home to host Love Island’s spin- off show, A f tersun, and her weekly BBC Radio 5 Live programme.
