Leipzig leap back to top of the Bundesliga
RB Leipzig eased past struggling Werder Bremen 3-0 to reclaim top spot in the Bundesliga, two points ahead of champions Bayern Munich.
Having failed to win in their last four games in all competitions, Leipzig were desperate to bounce back and Lukas Klostermann’s 18th-minute goal put them in the driving seat.
Patrik Schick – who had set up Klostermann – then grabbed one himself, heading in his sixth league goal in 39 minutes before Nordi Mukiele latched on to a deep through ball to fire in their third a minute after the restart.
Leipzig are now on 455 points, with Bayern – in action against Cologne on today – on 43.
Bayer Leverkusen moved into fourth place, two points behind Borussia Dortmund, when Karim Bellarabi struck in stoppage time to secure a hard-fought 3-2 victory at Union Berlin.
Hertha Berlin made a winning start to life after Jurgen Klinsman, beating Paderborn 2-1 with a goal from former Celtic defender Dedryck Boyata and an own goal from Jamilu Collins.
Boss Klinsmann quit the Hertha job last week after only 76 days in charge, complaining about a lack of trust and support.
Dutchman Wout Weghorst scored a hat-trick in VfL Wolfsburg’s 3-2 victory over Hoffenheim.
In Spain, Barcelona moved level on points with La Liga leaders Real Madrid after a 2-1 victory over third-placed Getafe.
Antoine Griezmann ended his league scoring drought after 33 minutes before Sergi Roberto doubled their advantage just six minutes later.
Sub AngelAng Rodriguez hit Getafe’s consolation shortly after the hour mark.
In Italy, rock-bottom Ser Serie A side SPAL lost 2-1 to Lecce. They could be four points adrift if Brescia beat Juventus this afternoon.
