We won’t admit we’re safe – just like Jurgen won’t hail title glory

- Gary Holt

Work hard in silence and let success be your noise.

It’s a saying which has stuck with me as a player and manager.

It’s why shouting from the rooftops about achievements before they’re secured is an act of folly, although Liverpool could probably get away with it now.

And why Livingston won’t be saying anything about Premiership safety until it’s signed and sealed.

Jurgen Klopp knows his team’s lead at the top of the Premier League is insurmountable but he’ll admit nothing.

There’s a confidence at Anfield just now, a mentality of such overwhelming belief that they can afford to think the first title for 30 years is bound for Merseyside at the end of the season.

In football, success is relative to so many factors. Money, ambition, expectation and knowing what you are and where you should be as a club is paramount to gauging whether it’s a good job done or whether you should be doing far better.

Our club are in the top-flight for only the second season after climbing up from League One.

We have a squad who are testing themselves at this level for the first time.

We’ve had to suck it and see with regard to so many of the challenges we’ve faced in that time, so much of life in the Premiership is brand new to a host of boys at the club.

We achieved a points total of 44 last season and this season’s target is 45. It’s as simple as that.

At the minute we are sitting on 37 points. We are sitting in fifth but it hasn’t insulated us from criticism.

After a few defeats there were some climbing aboard the HOLT OUT train and that’s football to a T.

I look at the magnificent job Derek McInnes has done at Aberdeen and see what ambition and expectation can do to fans of a club who take second place finishes for granted year on year. Derek believes Dons should be judged with Hibs and Hearts and says both of the Edinburgh teams would love to be in their position.

He’s spot on.

All three are comparable in size, budget and history. It’s arguable Aberdeen don’t have the same spending power as Hearts but Derek has regularly made his side best of the rest.

It’s about setting realistic expectation levels when you can’t compete financially and there’s a delusion from some fans about where they should be.

Fans should always dream of winning trophies and leagues. They should always want the absolute best and believe they can compete at the top of the table but there’s a huge diffeference between believing and a appreciating the bare facts of where y you are in the grand scheme of t things.

Maybe the v voices shouting at McInnes should be careful what t they wish for and appreciate where t they were before h he arrived.

At Livingston we know our li limitations and we work well within our means. Only in t the last few weeks h have we installed a new media suite and again it’s adding some small things to try to improve the perception of

Livi now being a top-flight club.

Nobody has the divine right to expect success, not Liverpool, Celtic or Livingston for that matter.

The Scottish Premiership contains a structure of clubs which can be sorted into about three or four tiers.

We will just continue to work hard and leave it for others to judge if it’s enough. You work towards being the best you can be and hope that it’s enough.

There are people who you will never please – complaining and dissatisfaction can be a sport in itself!

We got 44 points last season, this year’s target is 45, it’s as simple as that. We’re sitting fifth but still getting stick
