McGill: Put simply, I’m rubbish

-

Anthony McGill branded himself “rubbish” after two terrible years.

The Scot burst on to the scene with a quarter-final appearance on his World Championship debut in 2015.

And he went on to win his first ranking title at the 2016 Indian Open before pocketing the Shoot Out crown the following season.

But the 29-year-old has failed to reach a quarter-final in the past two seasons and tumbled to world No.35.

He said: “I think I’m rubbish, I think I’m terrible. I just lack confidence.

“When I really put my mind to it I can play and recently I’m a bit more determined than I have been.

“But I’ve just not been playing well and am struggling for form.”

Despite that, McGill still managed to reach the Shoot Out third round in Watford yesterday with an 83-17 win over Welshman Dominic Dale.

It follows his run to the last 16 of the Welsh Open in Cardiff this month.

He added: “I’ve not been really caring much lately. But I can feel myself wanting to do well again now. I’ve been trying a bit harder than what I have been in recent times. I don’t know where that’s come from.

“Sometimes I just don’t care about snooker enough then sometimes I do.

“I’m trying to be a bit more considered at the moment. I’m trying to play a little bit smarter than just going for a red if it’s out.”

Scots amateur Dean Young, 18, joined him in the third round, beating Englishman Liam Highfield 61-0 in their one-frame showdown.

Mark Williams crashed out, losing 54-36 to world No.83 Ashley Carty.
