Etiquette flop for Capaldi

Behaviour coach on how she tried to teach sweary star Lewis

- Norman Silvester

Lewis Capaldi’s record firm spent thousands of pounds to hire an etiquette expert to teach him how to walk and talk properly.

Celebrity party organiser Liz Brewer was paid a five-figure sum for a three-hour session at her home in Chelsea, London. Brewer – who has worked with Prince

Charles, Richard Branson and Donald Trump’s first wife Ivana – took Capaldi through three rigorous sessions.

In the first, he was shown how to introduce himself to people, shake hands and kiss, remember names and make small talk.

Then he was shown how to sit and walk elegantly, enter and leave a room with style and get in and out of a car correctly.

The final lesson was on dining etiquette and involved the proper use of cutlery and how to speak to people at a dining table.

Last month, Capaldi won the Best New Artist award at the Brits. But his speech had to be muted on TV when he said the F-word after carrying his drink on stage to collect his trophy.

The etiquette lessons took place in October 2018, shortly before the 23-year-old – from Whitburn, West Lothian – released smash hit Someone You Loved.

Liz said: “He wasn’t a big star then and didn’t have the reputation he has now. But they must have thought he had potential to spend that money.

“He was a good pupil and listened carefully.”

Liz declined to say how much she was paid for the three-hour session but admitted it was “well over four figures”.

She added: “None of the classes included any swearing and he never swore when he was with me. He was a perfect pupil.

“It’s a great shame he feels he has to swear now as he’s a nice guy with huge talent.

“I think it’s an age thing and I’m sure he will grow out of it.”
