Close schools over coronavirus fears? Just ask my daughter Lila
It was Bring Your Child to Work day at my daughter’s school this week and Lila, 11, got stuck with me.
So I handed over the end panel of my column to her. What follows is all her own work. (Note – Lila’s views on school closures and the coronavirus do not necessarily represent those of John Niven, the Sunday Mail or, indeed, any sane parent…)
There is now serious talk that British schools may close for up to two months because of the
Boris Johnson coronavirus. My reaction? Great – I can finally catch up on my homework.
We get far too much of it now. On Fridays, teachers say: “Enjoy your weekend!” Then they set you two essays, a group project and a bunch of maths. Studies show that younger children do better with homework. I think this is because they get set less of it than us older children.
Studies also show that children forget
93 per cent of what they learn within three days. This is because we are often given too much to deal with.
I don’t want anyone to die from coronavirus but I don’t think I’m the only pupil in Britain who would like some time off.
