VW transport milestone

-

Volkswagen’s Transporter has celebrated its 70th birthday, making it the world’s longest production run for a commercial vehicle.

Also known as Bulli, Kombi, VW bus or microbus, it first rolled off the Wolfsburg production line on March 8, 1950, and has since sold 13million units.

The future continues for the icon, with the

T6.1, launched in 2019, showcasing a new dash.

This is the first revamp of the Captur since it was launched to much acclaim and huge sales success in 2013.

Now, in 2020, the second generation has been tweaked outside with a wider, longer and more rugged stance. It also has skid plates back and front, roof bars and a lovely black roof, which contrasts beautifully with the Desert Orange body colour and 17in alloys.

Inside, it rocks the wow factor with a Signature Orange interior pack offering contrasting burnt orange design cues on the doors, seats and along the dash.

If you prefer something a little quieter, there are two other styles to choose from.

Colour is one of the winning ways of the Captur.

Renault knows that design plays a huge role in decisions to buy its cars and has totally taken this onboard with 10 exterior colours to choose from –

There is loads of space and a small, sporty gearstick.

The 7in colour touchscreen (9.3in on the S trim) comes with sat nav, DAB, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as two USB points and wireless charging.

But it is the drive that is really fun. It comes with an automatic box paired to certain engines but, in this 1.0-litre, it has a five-speed manual shift that is slick and smooth.

It fires you around the country with a lightness of touch and a deftness

It is exactly what you need when first venturing on to the roads on your own and it looks good too.

There are plenty of safety systems and even cruise control and traffic sign recognition.

It has Renault’s automatic emergency assist along with lane keep assist and lane departure warning.

The Captur has been a market leader for Renault and it has now been given a stronger SUV look to make it even more appealing. It also comes with a tremendous five year/ 100,000-mile warranty.

But its space inside, its ease of handling and its response should also make it a go-to car for any young – or youngat-heart driver – wanting to get their own set of wheels.
