Dyson tops rich list with £16.2bn

Inventor Sir James Dyson has been named as the richest person in the UK.

The Brex it- back ing g entreprene­ur’s wealth grew by £ 3.6billion over the past year, climbing to £16.2billion.

The latest Sunday Times Rich List revealed wealth in Scotland has held up at a better rate compared to the rest of the UK over the e last year and amid the e coronaviru­s outbreak.

The total number of richhliste­rs born, based or whose e wealth is largely tied up in n Scotland has remained the e same this year at 82, but t their combined worth is up p 13 per cent to £ 39.5billion. .

Fashion billionair­e and d landowner Anders Povlsen n came out on top of the Scots s rankings as a new entry with h his £ 4.73billion fortune.

In addition to a 26.4 per r cent stake in fashion retailer r Asos, he owns Danish h clothing firm Bestseller.

Among the 82 names in n the Scottish Rich List, 40 0 have seen their wealth h increase in the past year r and just 25 have seen it t reduced.

Glenn Gordon and d family, who are behind the Moray- based disti l ler William Grant & Sons, have seen the biggest increase – up 10.5 per cent.

Trond Mohn and Marit Mohn West lake saw a £277million drop in wealth.

The siblings set up a firm called Meteva to manage their investment­s and phi lanthropy but their holdings in offshore drilling outf it Transocean and shipping group DOF have lost value.

Seven boats carrying migrants – including a baby and three toddlers – reached the UK yesterday but were intercepte­d in the English Channel by Border Force officials and police.

The children were among passengers in six boats that made it close to Dover, Kent.

Another vessel was spotted near Pett Level and Winchelsea Beach in east Sussex and was taken to

Dover. In total, seven boats were thought to have made it to the UK.

Photos show suspected migrants wearing face masks and life jackets being brought into the UK on a Border Force dinghy.

The toddlers were taken from the dinghies, with blankets wrapped around their shoulders.

A baby was also carried in a blanket from a Border Force inflatable by officials, who wore masks and gloves.

Another boat – believed to have 17 migrants on board – broke down off the coast of Calais in the English Channel. French authoritie­s picked up the vessel and returned it to Calais.

More than 1200 migrants are believed to have been intercepte­d while trying to cross the channel since the start of the year.
