Just call Celts as champs

-

Farense boss Sergio Vieira says the SPFL are right to call the Premiership and crown Celtic champs if the season can’t be completed on the pitch.

His side have now been promoted to Portugal’s top f light after their season was prematurely ended due to Covid-19.

Along with top dogs Nacional they will be playing in Primeira Liga next term with Scot Ryan Gauld in their ranks.

Vieira says they deserved to go up and he now expects Scotland to reach a similar conclusion with the Premiership.

The Scottish game is embroiled in conflict over what will happen as a result of the football freeze.

There’s no prospect of the season being played to a completion given the coronavirus outbreak and SPFL bosses are expected to confirm the Hoops as champions by calling the season this week.

And Vieira feels it’s only right to crown Neil Lennon’s league leaders as champs based on their performances so far.

He said: “The authorities in i Scotland have to make a careful assessment on this t matter.

“They must decide if it’s possible p to play games with the t guarantee of health and a safety for everyone.

“Of course, we like to conquer c the pitch – that’s where w players, coaches and supporters s are happiest.

“But if there are no guarantees g of a safe return then t the season should end and a the final awards given to t the clubs as is shown in the t table.

“We had a successful season s so we deserve that.

“We have a squad with great g potential, a lot of o ambition and the players p were united in their goal g to be promoted to Primeira P Liga.”
