LEIPZIG VAR TOO SLOPPY

-

Title hopefuls RB Leipzig needed the help of VAR to salvage a 1-1 draw at home to Freiburg as the German top-flight returned.

Leipzig wasted a heap of great chances after falling behind until captain Yussuf Poulsen rose to head them level in the 77th minute, with Freiburg having a stoppage-time winner ruled out by VAR for offside.

Leipzig boss Jul ian Nagelsmann said: “It’s good to have had the VAR, we had a bit of luck there to be honest. We need to discuss how we react to these set pieces, we need to defend better at the near post.

“I am satisfied with the game but not with the result. In the second half we did wel l, created good chances and had a lot of pressure.”

Leipzig dropped to fourth place and will now fall eight points off the title pace if leaders Bayern Munich win at Union Berlin today.

But Raphael Guerreiro scored twice as Dortmund moved just a point off the top with a 4- 0 Ruhr derby win over Schalke.

Erling Haaland and Thorgen Hazard grabbed the other goals.

Monchengladbach went into third place thanks to a 3-1 win at Frankfurt.

Early strikes by Alassane Plea and Marcus Thuram got them on their way. Ramy Bensebaini netted a penalty before Andre Silva bagged a consolation for Frankfurt.

Daniel Ginczek struck a stoppage-time winner for Wolfsburg as they snatched a 2-1 victory at Augsburg.

Kevin Akopugma’s own goal got Hertha Berlin on their way as they recorded an impressive 3- 0 victory at Hoffenheim. Vedad Ibisevic and Matheus Cunha made sure of the points.

Bottom dogs Paderborn drew 0- 0 with strugglers Fortuna Dusseldorf.
