Mum’s inquiry hope over death of 10-year-old

-

The mum of 10-yearold Milly Main, who died at Scotland’s flagship hospital, has said the public inquiry that starts this week must “uncover the truth” about what happened.

The inquiry will examine issues at the Queen El izabeth Univer s it y Hospital campus in Glasgow and the mothballed Royal Hospital for Children and Young People in Edinburgh.

Labour MSP for Glasgow Anas Sarwar said families must be at the heart of the investigation.

K imbe r l y D a r roch bel ieves her daughter Milly’s death was caused by contaminated water at the hospital but says the family are still “in the dark”. Milly had leukaemia from the age of five but was in remission before getting an infection at the QEUH in 2017.

She died that August, with her death certificate listing a stenotrophomona s infection of the Hickman line – a catheter used to administer drugs – as a cause of death.

The family say they were not told about the link to c ont ami n a t e d wa t e r problems at the hospital.

But a review by Health Prot ec t ion Scot land confirmed contamination of the water system in 2018.

Kimberly, 3 6 , f rom Lanark, said: “Nearly three years since Milly died, we feel the heart-breaking loss of our daughter every day and feel we’re still in the dark about her death.

“Having been let down by the health board, we hope the public inquiry wi l l uncover the truth about what happened at the hospital – not just for us but for all the families affected, and to ensure no other family ever has to go through what we went through.”

Sarwar added: “The Health Secretary has made a firm commitment that families will be at the heart of the inquiry and that promise must be kept.”
