In early 1968, as newlyweds, my husband and I moved from Dundee and went to live and work in Cape Town, South Africa.

Just starting out in life, we were both earning quite meagre salaries but I found this bright yellow Mary Quant high-collared, flared raincoat in a small boutique in Seapoint, Cape Town, and treated myself to it.

It was stunning – the first piece of designer clothes I ever owned.

On every posh occasion, it was worn. I was confirmed in St Mary’s Cathedral in downtown Cape Town wearing this incredible raincoat.

In 1969, we moved to Johannesbu­rg and my Mary Quant raincoat served me well, especially in the regular evening downpours of rain in the city.

We returned to Dundee in 1971 and my raincoat came with me and was worn for many a year.

These photos show a suit I made in 1965 from Mary Quant patterns.

I had four pieces – top, jacket, skirt and trousers – which were worn on a college trip to France and then to my graduation in Aberdeen.

As a young teenager, I used to go to the Quant showroom in London with my mother. She was a business owner and fashion buyer.

This picture was taken of me in 1968 in a Quant dress from the Ginger Group. I only wish I had kept them all. buttons. My all-time favourite Mary Quant “little black dress” was Butterick 3499 with an inverted heart neckline worn with a white gardenia on the point, which I wore to a rather smart cocktail party at the French embassy in Toronto in the 1960s.
