Jaco boot does the talking

- David Kelso

Jaco van der Walt admitted he was almost lost for words after his flawless display with the boot propelled Edinburgh to derby glory.

The South African playmaker slotted 15 points to play a major part in the victory over Glasgow at Murrayfield.

Man of the match van der Walt said: “It was a great result for us after being so long away from live rugby.

“I am really proud of the way the team regrouped and came out strongly in the second half after being rusty at the start.

“For me, the most difficult thing in the build up was returning to talking to the guys in English after five months of speaking Afrikaans!”

Edinburgh boss Richard Cockerill couldn’t disguise his satisfaction as his troops made sure of a place in the Pro14 semi-finals.

But he wants another strong display against the same opponents on Friday in the hope of securing a home tie.

Murrayfield will be back open for business for a select number of Edinburgh season-ticket holders with 700 fans expected to be allowed inside the stadium.

Cockerill said: “We have earned the right to be in the last four and believe we can go all the way.”

The match was Glasgow coach Danny Wilson’s first in charge and he said: “We failed to build any pressure in phases.

“Edinburgh’s defensive breakdown was pretty accurate and our attacking breakdown we got on the wrong side of the referee and gave a few penalties away that stalled our momentum.

“And then two soft tries we shouldn’t be conceding, resulting from not getting out our own third. There was a turnover there and a kick that stays on the field when we are up against it, and it leaves us in a very difficult defensive position.

“That led to two soft tries and that’s the difference on the scoreboard.”
