Campbell gives Well first win to ease jitters

-

Stephen Robinson is sure Motherwell’s Premiership season finally has lift- off after Allan Campbell’s super strike sealed a first league win at last.

The Fir Park boss believes it’s now onwards and upwards after Well went level on points with Livingston and Kilmarnock thanks to the victory over toothless St Johnstone.

It brought a mixture of relief and hard-earned reward for the Irish gaffer.

Robinson said: “Winning eases pressure but there was a real belief that we’re a good side.

“Sometimes a bit of luck goes against you and that happened to us. Everyone suffers that at some stages and we hadn’t got the rub but this time we showed a different side.

“We’re three points off fifth and I never thought there was a crisis. We went one up and the back five were very good. They defended very well.

“Our midfield didn’t have as much influence but the determination was excellent. I don’t think Trevor Carson had a save to make if I remember right.

“We’ll play better than we did today. But winning ugly, you could see the players enjoyed putting their bodies in front of the ball and dying to win a football match.”

The opener after just four minutes was another moment of brilliant opportunism from Campbell.

After turning Jamie McCart, the

Scotland Under-21 kid did just what he had against Lithuania during the week by smashing a shot home from the edge of the area.

This time his 20-yarder was low and flew past Elliot Parish to underline the growing authority of the midfielder.

Saints had plenty of the play but it was all too predictable and from side to side with no penetration.

Sub Stevie May wasted their best chance when he pounced on a Bevis Mugabi slip but fired wide.

Well sub Jordan White, later forced back off after a clash of heads, nodded just wide as they looked to seal it.
