Leonard Dignity is vital for elderly
The Scottish Government has been accused of punishing care home residents for its initial failure to manage coronavirus spread.
Almost 2000 deaths have been attributed to Covid-19 in homes amid shocking revelations - first reported in the Sunday Mail – that ministers allowed infected patients to be discharged from hospitals.
Labour Health spokeswoman
Monica Lennon said: “Restrictions on family contact have fuelled a hidden catastrophe in care homes and it can’t continue.
“Sitting in car parks and waving at windows are completely inadequate measures.”
Scottish Lib Dem public health brief Rosemary Bruce said: “Residents in care homes across the country have endured real suffering being parted from their families for so long and many with dementia are especially distressed.”
Scottish Labour Leader Richard Leonard added: “There has been a human rights dimension to the treatment of people in residential care that has been a concern for a long time. I think dignity for people in old age is critical, and we need to understand that people in residential care homes are in what is their home.”
Scottish Greens
Health spokesperson Alison Johnstone MSP said, “Throughout the pandemic, many older people in care homes have been unable to take part in communal activities due to restrictions, those who have shown symptoms have been isolated in their rooms, and visits have been extremely limited.
“No one doubts the restrictions were introduced for the best of reasons but the consequences of prolonged isolation are stark.”
