Russell hails van der Merwe try

Finn Fi Russell insists he will w not be an automatic pick for Scotland’s Six Nations finale – after revelling in “some fun” on his dark blue return.

The fly-half came off the bench in Friday’s 48-7 rout of Georgia to claim his 50th cap.

A trip to Wales looms on Saturday as Gregor Townsend’s side finish a delayed Six Nations.

Toony declared he added “fizz” to the attack as Russell said: “It was just good to be back with the lads.

“I wasn’t trying to show anything or do too much. I just played my game.

“It is not for me to decide who plays. I just went out there and had some fun – that’s why you saw me smiling.

“It’s a team game and I’m going to support everyone as much as possible.”

Russell underlined his quality in slipping the inside pass for Duhan van der Merwe to notch a debut try.

The Racing 92 playmaker said: “After the game I said to him, ‘If I’m at 10, make sure you’re on the inside there – I’ll put you in for a few tries!’”

Having made his bow in 2014, the 28-year-old has now hit the 50 mark after burying the hatchet with Townsend.

He added: “We had a presentation in the changing room afterwards for the guys winning their first caps and me for my 50th.

“It is an amazing achievement but wasn’t in the forefront of my mind in the build-up.”

Van der Merwe and Russell were both praised by their coach, so too Darcy Graham after a try double.

Townsend said: “He went through an emotional period seven, eight months ago when he got injured at training and missed that chance to play for Scotland.

“He’s been working hard at Edinburgh, playing really well and it was good to see him get a lot of involvements before he popped up for another try at the end.”
