Price isn’t right for Scots duo as champs crash

-

Scotland were dethroned as world champions as they crashed 2-1 to Wales last night.

John Henderson and Robert Thornton took the World Cup favourites all the way to the doubles decider in Austria before slumping to a 4-0 defeat.

Gerwyn Price got the Welsh off to a f lying start with two 12-dart legs in a row as he took a 3- 0 lead in the first singles match against Henderson.

It was tough on the big Highlander who was averaging near the 100 mark.

But he hit back with a 121 check- out then took the fifth leg too only for Price to kill off the comeback and claim a 4-2 victory in Salzburg.

Ayrshire ace Thornton kept hopes of repeating last year’s glory alive in a ding- dong battle with Johnny Clayton.

The Scot was never behind after claiming the first leg and he eventual ly saw off the Welshman’s challenge to claim a 4-2 win.

But the Scots ran out of steam in the crucial doubles decider and failed to win a single leg as they were knocked out.

Wales face Australia in the last eight today and Price beamed: “I think we were more

consistent in the pairs and you can’t argue with a 4- 0 win.”

Clayton said: “I let Gerwyn down with my game against Robert. I was confident going into it but Rob did the job and I had to lift my head for the pairs and we came through it.

“I’m feeling good and Gez is playing awesome. It’s a big game tomorrow but if we both bring our A games we’ll win it.”

Australia booked their spot with a 2- 0 win over Poland, the same score Germany enjoyed as they saw off Greece.

England are through to the quarter-finals after beating Lithuania and were joined by Canada, Austria and Belgium who beat New Zealand,Portugal and Latvia respectively.
