Wright : Third is Dons’ minimum

- ■ Scott Burns

Scott Wright helped Aberdeen move back into third place by sinking Hibs on Friday but admitted that’s the minimum requirement at Pittodrie this season.

The Dons eased past Hibs 2- 0 to leapfrog the Easter Road side and go level on points with Celtic.

Wright insists that with the squad they have they should be aiming to be the best of the rest or look even higher.

He said: “Third is the minimum requirement we see as a squad.

“We’re always going to push ourselves and see how far that can take us.

“I’d say this is the strongest squad we’ve had. There are so many options in different positions and we can change formation during a game.”

Aberdeen will regroup during the international break before facing one of their toughest challenges in going away to league leaders Rangers.

Wright said: “That’s going to be a difficult game.

‘We’ll rest up and obviously we’ve got some boys going away on international duty and some will get work in at Cormack Park.

“When we get everyone back as a squad, that’s when we’ll start to turn our attention to Rangers.”

Wright was delighted to grab the opener against Hibs because he wants to make goals a key ingredient of his game.

The 23-year-old admitted: “I’ve needed to step up and make the manager say ‘I can’t drop him’.

“Whether that’s by getting more goals or assists or just doing a job for the team, I need for him to say that he has to play me next week.

“I’m buzzing. I’ve needed to add more goals to my game.

“I’ve been getting in the positions but haven’t been taking my chances, which I’ve been frustrated about.

“All I can do is keep working hard at training and I’m delighted it fell for me against Hibs.

“I’ve always felt I needed to add more goals and assists to my game. It’s something I can do more of.

“I’ve been working on it in training, just in different scenarios, going through one on one with the goalie, coming out with snapshots like it was against Hibs.

“All the coaches - Paul Sheerin, Tony Docherty, the gaffer now and again, and Barry Robson - have been helping me with my finishing and it’s great for a player like me to absorb as much information as I can and put it into the games.”
