McGinn: It can’t get worse than these howlers

- Scott Burns

Paul McGinn hopes Hibs have just come through the worst week of their season.

It started with a loss to arch-rivals Hearts in their Scottish Cup semi then a self-inflicted 2- 0 defeat at Aberdeen on Friday that saw them fall out of the top three.

Jamie Murphy gave up possession on the edge of his area for Scott Wright to score then Ryan Porteous’ bungled clearance fell to Sam Cosgrove to slot home.

McGinn insists they will work to put things right in the Betfred Cup against Dundee next weekend before they return to league action against champs Celtic.

The full-back said: “It was never going to be plain sailing but I hope this proves the worst week we have all season.

“There is a long way to go. We are still in a good position so just have to take it on the chin.

“Hopefully we can get back on track against Dundee. The Celtic game won’t be easy but we will take it as it comes.

“There is pressure on them just now and we will both be desperate to get the win.”

The right-back knows Hibs were well off their game in Aberdeen and lost both goals from defensive mistakes.

McGinn said: “Yeah, we shot ourselves in the foot, massively. We gave away two soft goals within 10 minutes.

“Ryan could do that 100 times and 90 times would get away with it.

“Aberdeen weren’t particularly good but they didn’t need to be. ”

Derek McInnes’ side are now two up in the head- to- head record after a 1-0 win in August.

Lewis Ferguson fired in a penalty at Easter Road to grab the points.

McGinn accepts that is something they will need to address.

He said: “That is three shocking goals we’ve given away to them.

“It beggars belief and we give ourselves an uphill battle.

“The defeats have come in big games, big moments, but you can’t legislate for daft goals like that.”
