Shanks keen to fire us to Euros

- FRASER WILSON

Lawrence Shankland scored 91 goals in three seasons as he forced his way into the Scotland squad.

Now he’d love just one if it ends the nation’s 23-year exile from a major finals.

But the Dundee United hitman doesn’t care who finds the net against Serbia on Thursday night in the shoot- out for spot at the delayed Euro 2020 next summer.

Shankland believes Steve Clarke’s men go into the crunch game in Belgrade on a roll after going eight games unbeaten and posting three clean sheets in a row.

The 25-year- old striker said: “Hopefully we can go there and win – that would be huge.

“We’re in good form. It’s eight games unbeaten so you can’t ask for much more going into a game of that magnitude.

“I’m not too bothered about the performance – it’s just about getting through. If we can do that I’m sure

everyone will be happy. We’re going into the game in good form, the team is doing well and we’ll look to go over there and get another result which will take us through.

“Everybody wants to get to a major tournament. We are one game away and you don’t get many bet ter chances than that.”

Shankland has had to make do with the odd run out off the bench since breaking his international duck in the 6- 0 rout of San Marino last year.

He’s likely to be among the subs again on Thursday but insists he’s desperate to play his part.

He said: “It’s a hugely important game to be involved in and I’ll look to do what I can if called upon to play a part.

“I ’ m sure whoever is selected to do the job, the full squad will be behind them and hoping they can go and get it done.”
