I’ll give it my Holl for cap

- Mark Walker

George Johnston fears he may have to leave Holland to keep his Scotland dream alive.

The Feyenoord defender was one of the stars of the Under- 21s’ European campaign.

But after a 1- 0 defeat in Greece saw Scot Gemmill’s squad come up just short of qual ifying, former Liverpool kid Johnston has set his sights on graduating to Steve Clarke’s full squad.

However, having made just sub appearances for Feyenoord, despite being a fixture in Dick Advocaat’s side in pre- season, he knows he needs games to catch Clarke’s eye ahead of the Euro 2020 finals.

The 22-year-old said: “I’m a bit frustrated. I’ve come on a few times for Feyenoord but I’m at an age now where I need to be playing week in, week out. So we’ll see what the future

holds. The main thing is that no one can question my attitude.

“I give 110 per cent every training session and I’ve just been waiting to get a game in my favoured position and get a start.

“If it doesn’t work out at Feyenoord then I know what my qualities are and I know some team will give me an opportunity.

“My big aim is to play for Scotland one day and to do that first and foremost I need to be at a club that gives me first- team football at the right level.

“I’m confident if that happens I will show my qualities and what I can do. Then the aim is to push on into the full squad one day.

“That was my last game for the Under-21s and to come so close and to get nothing was heartbreaking.

“Everyone was hurting after the game but I think that we can be proud of ourselves over the whole campaign. We gave everything but just couldn’t get over the line.”
