Boss Moffs cap to hero

Michael hailed for his 100th Ayr goal

- STUART WILSON

Mark Kerr hailed magic Michael Moffat as the Ayr veteran bagged his 100th goal for the Honest Men.

Moff racked up his century as United piled the pressure on Dundee boss James McPake with another defeat for the Dark Blues.

And Ayr manager Kerr was quick to heap praise on his talisman for reaching the special landmark. He said: “It’s a brilliant achievement for Moff.

“He has been sitting in the 90s for ages and lockdown hasn’t helped.

“Hopefully he can stay at the club for as long as he can – either on or off the park. It was a brilliant finish for his goal.”

Ayr were straight on the front foot and hit the front inside three minutes.

Clever play on the edge of the box from Luke McCowan teed up Cammy Smith.

And the on-loan Dundee United winger showed composure to roll beneath Dens debut keeper Adam Legzdins.

United soon doubled their lead with the milestone goal for Moffat.

Good work by Joe Chalmers helped tee up the Ayr veteran and he showed all his class to slide home from 10 yards.

Dundee badly needed a quick response to get back in the game and Osman Sow saw a volley flash just wide before Paul McGowan was denied by a Jordan Houston block.

Dundee began the second half on the front foot and blew a golden chance.

Christie Elliot somehow fluffed his lines with a free header from just six yards and sent his effort straight at Viljami Sinisalo.

Ayr keeper Sinisalo denied Shaun Byrne as the Dark Blues poured forward.

At the other end, Ayr could have grabbed a third when a Paddy Reading’s cross was headed inches wide by Andy Murdoch. But they saw the game out comfortably.

Fuming Dens gaffer McPake said: “I sound like a broken record but it was two poor goals to lose. I understand why fans are angry. I’ve played at this club and know the demands.”
