Lennon lashes his lazy Bhoys

Lennon says his side – who still have two games in hand – can barely afford any more slip-ups.

The Hoops needed an injury-time Diego Laxalt equaliser to avoid defeat.

After Scott Brown had conceded a penalty, Jamie Murphy put Hibs in front before Kevin Nisbet doubled their lead.

An Odsonne Edouard spot-kick provided a lifeline before Laxalt’s late leveller.

Lennon said: “We shot ourselves in the foot. Scott made a really rash decision that was unnecessary.

“And the second goal is awful – it’s just lazy.

“It’s a free header, we didn’t track the run and just let Nisbet get the shot off. It was so easy.

“We gave ourselves a mountain to climb and we did it. The attitude and quality in the last 20 minutes was excellent but that should be for the 90. It might be an important point as we go along but I am not in a celebratory mood at getting a draw.

“Scott Bain even saved the penalty for us but we had two boys standing watching the rebound. Murphy was first to react.

“We’ve got to get a defensive mode on. We are not doing the nuts and bolts anywhere near well enough.

“There’s a softness about us defensively that we have got to eradicate.

“The first goal came out of nothing. Scott, who was playing well, had a real rush of blood for some reason.

“He needs to take that out of his game. There’s a long way to go but I’m looking for a better level of performance and to get a run together. The attitude of some of the players has to be better.

“We had to change the shape again to get back in the game. It’s too common a theme.

“It’s frustrating and it’s head-scratching. The players have to start concentrating and showing a lot more desire. We can’t afford any more slip-ups.

“This team is capable of going on a good run but they have to be mentally tuned in every week. It was apparent today that some of them switched off mentally.

“We aren’t doing the dirty bits well enough and we need to get rid of that softness because teams are highly motivated against us.”

Celtic keeper Bain insists doubters would be wrong to write the champs off just yet.

He said: “It is frustrating. When we were 2-0 down we showed great character and belief that we could still go on and win.

“I think if the game was another three or four minutes we would’ve come away with a victory.

“We were in total control in the first half. If we’d showed a bit more quality in the final third it would have been an easier game.

“Saving the penalty but conceding a rebound goal was frustrating as we do all the work on penalties and what’s going to happen.

“We need to be better all round the pitch at helping your mate out a little bit more. You’re silly if you write us off. We have always shown an ability to go on a run at the turn of the year.”
