Give Jim a Good tribute

- ■ Ewing Grahame

Gary Teale reckons old team-mate Jim Goodwin should have a stand at St Mirren named after him if he completes a dream League Cup double.

The ex-Scotland winger was in the side current boss Goodwin captained to glory in 2013.

Now he’s looking to lift the trophy again as gaffer of the Paisley side.

That would be sure to spark talk of erecting a statue of Goodwin in the town and Teale said: “Clubs only build statues to people who have made a major contribution to them.

“If Jim was to get them to the final and win it then there would need to be some kind of discussion about that.

“Then again, where would they put it? After all, the ground’s in a part of Paisley where a statue wouldn’t last long so they might name a stand after him instead!

“Jim would certainly deserve that because he’d

be a legend at the club. Saints won three trophies in the first 122 years of their history but, if they were to win the Betfred Cup this season, that would be their second in eight years.

“Jim was the captain when we beat Hearts in the 2013 final and this time he’d be the manager – that’s something that’s never happened before at St Mirren.

“Nothing beats playing the game and it was a special feeling when we won it together but I think Jim would take more satisfaction if he won it as a manager.

“When you look at the manager’s input into signings, selection and tactics, there’s much more involvement than you have as a player.

“To be honest, seeing how far ahead of everyone else, financially and in football terms, that Celtic and Rangers are then never in my wildest dreams did I think Saints would reach another cup final.”
