Dennis is the menace with his reprieve

- ■ Michael Gannon

Kristian Dennis wants to extend the season all the way to the Scottish Cup Final after fearing it was curtains for his campaign a few weeks ago.

The St Mirren striker scored in Friday’s last-gasp win against Inverness to set up a quarter- f inal clash at Kilmarnock.

Dennis is defying the doctors who wrote his season off when he was crocked in January and he’s out to make the most of his second chance.

The former Notts County ace said: “I’m buzzing to be back, playing and scoring goals again. Having another cup game just gives me another chance to play and make up for lost time.

“I thought my season was over eight weeks ago so this has all been a bit of a bonus and I’m loving it.

“I always back myself in front of goal. I probably should have had more than one on Friday but I was glad to get on the scoresheet after a few close things in the first half.

“I didn’t let my head go down after the missed chances as I always back myself to bounce back and get one eventually. The chance that I got, I knew I was definitely scoring.”

Marcus Fraser pounced in the last minute to see off the Highlanders and complete the f ightback after going a goal down.

Dennis said: “It was about getting into the next round. That’s all that matters.

“You think it might not be your night when stuff like hitting the post and bar happens but it was good the lads kept going. We didn’t let ourselves get down and eventually deserved the goal in the end.

“They were celebrating like mad when they scored so it was good for us to hit back straight away.

“We showed character to keep going and luckily we got the winner at the end.”

St Mirren beat Aberdeen and Rangers in the Betfred Cup before losing to Livingston in the Hampden semi-final.

Dennis said: “We would like to think we could go a step further again in the Scottish Cup.

“The big boys play each other so one of them will go out.”
