Cup ties are Firm favourite

Some of the best Old Firm games have come in Scottish Cup clashes.

Celtic have won 25 of their 51 ties and Rangers 16. Here’s MailSport looks back at five of the best.

2016 semi-final, Rangers 2 Celtic 2 (5-4 Gers on pens): Gers made a statement of intent before a top-flight return by beating Ronny Deila’s Hoops.

Mark Warburton’s Championsh­ip leaders led through Kenny Miller, Erik Sviatchenk­o took it to extra-time and after Barry McKay and Tom Rogic netted, the Aussie missed in the penalty shoot-out.

2011 fifth rd, Rangers 2 Celtic 2: A stunning longrange strike from Jamie Ness set the tone for a breathless derby.

Kris Commons levelled for Celts but Steven Whittaker’s penalty made it 2-1 after Fraser Forster was sent off. Scott Brown levelled and celebrated in front of El- Hadji Diouf before Steven Naismith saw red. Eight-man Gers lost the replay 1- 0.

2002 final, Rangers 3 Celtic 2: Celtic twice led thanks to headers from John Hartson and Bobo Balde but Barry Ferguson’s free-kick made it 2-2.

As extra-time loomed Peter Lovenkrand­s netted his second of the afternoon to dramatical­ly win it.

1991 quarter-final, Celtic 2 Rangers 0: A win that went down as the St Patrick’s Day Massacre.

Gerry Creaney and Dariusz Wdowczyk had Celtic on top and there was chaos after the break as Peter Grant, Terry Hurlock, Mark Walters and Mark Hateley all saw red.

1973 final, Rangers 3 Celtic 2: Gers celebrated their centenary year by edging a classic final. Kenny Dalglish fired Jock Stein’s side ahead but Derek Parlane and Alfie Conn turned it round.

Celts levelled from the spot through George Connelly and Tom Forsyth bundled home the winner from just inches out when Derek Johnstone’s header came off the post and rolled along the goal-line.
