I will always be grateful to Lenny for the chance he gave me

Scott Robertson could be forgiven for feeling a sense of relief to be watching a season of turmoil unfold at Celtic from afar. Scott debt as he eyes breakthrough

But the young Hoops midfielder insists he has been focused on the drama unfolding at his club from the safe distance of a loan spell at Doncaster Rovers.

As the 19-year-old gears up for a return to Glasgow this summer, he admits a win for his mates in the Scottish Cup against Rangers today is a must to make up for the disappointment of being dethroned in the title race by their rivals.

Robertson will watch the action from his hotel room and he said: “I watch all of the Celtic games and I’m the same as the rest of the boys in being bit terl y disappointed at how things have gone.

“But nothing should be allowed to sour the success the club have enjoyed in recent seasons. That can’t just be forgotten about.

“And there is a chance to put a smile on the faces of the fans on Sunday.

“Our Scottish Cup record has been incredible and it’s really important for Celtic to finish the season strong. If we can reach the final it would achieve that goal.

“It would also provide some momentum to take into next season.

“The l a s t couple of performances from Celtic have been excellent so we are going into this game in good form.

“I don’t see why we can’t get the result and progress. You see clubs all over Europe losing a manager and results pick up so I’m backing a Celtic win on Sunday.” Robertson a i ms to emulate pal Stephen Wel s h in becoming a f i rst- team regular when he returns.

He is, however, sad that former boss

Neil Lennon, who handed him his senior debut in a Europa League clash with Cluj over two years ago, won’t still be there at Parkhead.

He said: “The respect for Neil is universal but he’ll always be the man who gave me the chance to play for Celtic in Europe. I’ll forever be thankful to him for that.

“I was sad to see the way things ended for him at Celtic but he’s a legend. There will be a new man in charge when I go back and it’s important I’m in the best shape possible to impress him.

“Hopefully I’ ll get a few games in pre-season and I’ll take it from there.

“You look at how wel l Stephen Welsh has done. He has been brilliant and is an example of what can happen.”

Callum McGregor has also been an inspiration for Robertson at Doncaster after the Scotland star cut his teeth on loan in League One too.

The powerful midfielder said: “It’s been great to get games and be involved at a decent level.

“The big one for me was looking at Callum at Notts County early in his career and how that propelled him into things at Celtic when he returned.

“I took a lot of inspiration from the way he has thrived and one of my goals when I arrived here was to make the same sort of impact he had on this league.

“Hopefully I’ve done that and can go back to Celtic and hit the ground running.”
