Tycoon Morrison launches MSP bid

A former telecoms tycoon who lost a £300million fortune and claimed to be as rich as the Queen is bidding to become an MSP.

Jim Morrison, 58, was once ranked Scotland’s 13th richest man and was also the subject of a £20million divorce action.

Morrison, who lives on a 100-acre estate on the banks of Loch Lomond with his wife and family, is now standing as an independen­t candidate for his home town own of Dumbarton against current t MSP Labour’s Jackie Baillie.

In 2019, the Sunday Mail revealed how Morrison was involved in n a long-running court battle withth his family over a £260260,000 000 inheritanc­e left by their late parents.

Brother Robert and sisters Ann Degnan and Kathleen Morrison claimed that Morrison has thwarted attempts to divide the asset equally.

On a campaign website, Morrison says he aims tackle poverty and ensure everyone has a basic annual income of £18,000.

He also claims to have suffered the stigma of free school meals as a child, something which his older brother refutes.

Last night Robert, 64, a retired paramedic, said: “Most of the family live in Dumbarton and none will be voting for Jim.”

Morrison, an ex-British Telecom executive, created i-mate in 2001, which was at the cutting edge of the phone industry. However, i-mate crashed in 2009 amid claims a board member was behind a £9million fraud that ended the firm.

Morrison did not respond to our request for a comment yesterday.
