Star chose Doctor Who mini skirts

I loved my outfit.. I thought, I’m killing it, I look great

Karen Gillan has revealed she was behind the controversial decision to wear short skirts on Doctor Who.

The Hollywood actress, who played Amy Pond in the sci-fi series, said she picked all her outfits.

Bosses were criticised for “shamelessly sexing up” the long-running show and it was even accused of being too sexy for family viewing.

Following her debut on the BBC hit in April 2010, Karen’s appearance was labelled “slutty” by a small section of fans who objected to her being on screen in a policewoman’s outfit with a tiny skirt.

But the 33-year- old has said it was her choice to include short skirts as a staple part of her character’s costume and says, despite the backlash, she has never regretted it. Karen, from Inverness, said: “I remember being really involved in the process of choosing a costume.

“I remember being a wee 21-year-old and being like, ‘ I know what young girls wear and you don’t so I’m going to put me in a really short skirt,’ as that’s what I liked to wear at the time. I loved my outfit. I thought, ‘ I’m killing it, I look great.’

“But then I remember there was a little bit of backlash towards the length of the skirt and I remember being like, ‘Oops, yes, that was totally my fault’.”

Speaking out at the time, Karen defended the mini skirt and said it was a positive choice showing her character had confidence to wear such an outfit.

She said: “I mean, look down most high streets and girls Amy’s age wear that. It’s not that weird.

“Short skirts show that Amy is confident and comfortable about her look. You have to have confidence to wear something like that.”

Last year, Karen told how she regrets worrying about her body image when she was younger and urged other women not to do the same.

The screen star told how she became body conscious after becoming well known in her early 20s and encouraged young women to embrace how they look and not get stressed out.

She said: “I’d say to young women in their 20s, ‘Enjoy your body that you’re in’.

“I feel like in our 20s we’re like, ‘Eugh, eugh,’ and now that I’m in my 30s, I’m like, ‘I looked great’. I’m sure all of you out there will have the moment – men and women.

“So just enjoy your body and have fun because you only get one.”

Karen, who has starred in Avengers: Infinity War, Guardians Of The Galaxy and Jumanji, recently appeared with Harrison Ford in adventure movie Call Of The Wild.

She made the comments while speaking during an online Galaxy Con question-andanswer session.
