Ryan is spot on for Hibees

after they had thrown away a 2- 0 lead .

Porteous reckons it wouldn’t be Hibs if they didn’t do things the hard way and as they gear up for their third semi-final clash in a year he is targeting silverware.

He said: “It’s Hibs, we always seem to make things di f f icult for ourselves but we dug deep and showed some character at the end there to see it through.

“I was pretty confident. We practice penalties after training sometimes and I usually score them, but that’s the first time I’ve had a penalty in the professional game, so I was delighted.

“It’s not how you win cup games it’s just that you win them and we’re back to Hampden.”

Speaking to BBC Sportsound, he added: “It’s an opportunity to right our wrongs. If you’re in three semi-finals in a year you definitely want to win one.

“Our target this season was third place and winning a cup and nothing changes.”

Gutted Wel l boss Graham Alexander says Hibs’ second goal shouldn’t have stood.

The Fir Park gaffer believes Jackson Irvine was offside when he made it 2- 0 before his side’s incredible comeback with late goals from Ricki Lamie and Tony Watt.

That took the tie to extra-time before Hibs won 4-2 on penalties.

Alexander was proud of his players’ but was left to rue a poor decision by assistant ref Ross Macleod at Irvine’s goal.

He said: “Their second goal was offside. I’ve only seen it afterwards, not at the time, but it’s offside.

“I’m gutted for everyone because I thought the players were magnificent.

“We came with a game plan to frustrate at first which worked really well. Hibs didn’t have a shot on target in the first half.

“We took a step back at half-time for some reason and were punished for it sorely with a couple of goals.

“But the reaction from that point was absolutely amazing. The players showed character to get on the ball, press from the front and show what a quality team we can be.

“To come back against a fantastic team like Hibs away from home in such a pressure game, to get to 2-2, was incredible.

“I thought there was only one winner at that point but we couldn’t get that goal before penalties.”

The Steelmen played second fiddle to Hibs before their late rally and Alexander added:“I don’t regret that we didn’t show more intent earlier.

“We didn’t want to chase the game early on because we’ve lost players in certain areas so had to change the way we play.

“I do regret the way we started the second half, we didn’t put pressure on them and we can defend the first goal better.”

Alexander hailed super sub Watt but admitted he probably shouldn’t have played after injury.

He said: “Tony was a gamble for us. I didn’t expect to have him back, but he wanted to play and we felt it was worth going for it.”
