Bonner insists Hoops must rebuild side around Turnbull

- Ewing Grahame

Pat Bonner has urged Celtic to rebuild a whole new team around David Turnbull.

The legendary Hoops keeper thinks the performances of the midfielder this season offer some hope for the future.

The Parkhead board are continuing to dither over Neil Lennon’s successor, with Eddie Howe their preferred option.

But the new manager, when he’s appointed, has his work cut out in piecing together a team to challenge champions Rangers.

Bonner said: “As things stand, Rangers can just tweak their squad by bringing in one or two players to strengthen it.

“Celtic, though, have to completely rebuild theirs. In fact, I’d say that they must bring in a completely new team.

“Turnbull has been the one good signing in the last year and you can build around him and Callum McGregor.

“But they still need a new back five, a holding midfielder, two wingers and at least one striker – and who’s going to sign them?

“The club seem to have put all their eggs in one basket with Howe so why isn’t he here? Season tickets will be up for sale soon so they should give him a deadline then move on.

“Otherwise they’ll be playing catch-up before a ball is kicked.”

Bonner admits Lennon was unlucky to have so many key players injured during the season while Steven Gerrard’s side escaped such problems. He said: “Rangers were successful with the same tactics and formation as Jurgen Klopp uses at Liverpool.

“But what if they had to do without important individuals – as Celtic had to last season – for long spells?

“Or what if Klopp was to leave? “Gerrard’s stock is high enough at the moment to make him a genuine candidate for the job at Anfield.” BONNER
