Ryan will be Fraser sharp for the Euros

- Bill McIntyre

Ryan Fraser insists he is f it and raring to go for Scotland at Euro 2020 next month.

The Newcastle winger is desperate to prove himself on “one of the biggest stages” after getting the call from Steve Clarke.

The Newcastle United star has been a key player for the Scotland boss.

And Fraser insists it wasn’t a gamble to name him in the squad despite club boss Steve Bruce insisting it was after groin surgery had sidelined the 27-year-old since March.

Former Aberdeen kid Fraser said: “I’ve been training for the last three or four weeks now, so it’s not as if I’ve not been doing anything.

“Obv ious l y, people thought I was coming here with no fitness but I have been working hard and been keeping in contact with the gaffer.

“He has known the ins and outs of my injury for the last six or seven weeks, so it’s not as if I’ve just come here and I haven’t trained.

“I’m fully fit and I’ll use the next two games to hopefully get minutes in and just be ready.

“I always enjoy coming away with Scotland but over the last two years, especial ly with this manager, I’ve enjoyed it even more.

“He knows how to get the best out of me and that’s big in a manager.

“If he knows how to treat a player and get the best out of him, that’s massive and

I think that he has done that for me.

“I now need to do it on one of the biggest stages, if I play, and that’s what I’ll be trying to do.”

Fraser hopes to use Scotland’s warm-weather training camp in Spain to push his case for a starting place in the Euros clashes with the Czechs, England and Croatia.

There are also friendlies against Holland and Luxembourg and the winger added: “Since we qua l i f i ed, I ’ ve been thinking about it every day, to be honest, just what I can do to try to get in the team.

“Now I’m in the squad and you try to do your best to get in the starting XI.

“It’s exciting, the next 10 days here and playing the two games will get everyone ready for it.

“Everyone’s looking forward to it and I think you want to get minutes in your legs – some boys will be needing that type of fitness.

“We can use the Holland game for what we’re probably going to get against England.

“They have both got fantastic players and they’re going to have the majority of the ball.

“But you can use that as a warm-up match against England and then use the Luxembourg game to get more minutes to get everyone playing and for getting our tactics right for the games.”
