Four key players in class of 2011
MMark Wotte implemented ththe SFA performance scschools that have reared tatalented Euro 2020 kids BiBilly Gilmour and Nathan PaPatterson.
But he’s equally dedelighted to see players who were already in the Scottish system now starring in the Premier League and for Steve Clarke’s national team.
The Dutchman spent three-and-a-half years at Hampden as performance director. Even though we hadn’t qualified for a major tournament in two decades, he could see promising youngsters coming through.
Wotte told MailSport: “During my time in 2011 the players were with Scotland Under-19s.
“Many of them have developed – some going to England but others staying in Scotland.
“I’d like to mention four in particular who are definite key players now for the national team because of their ability, attitude and maturity.
“John McGinn was playing at St Mirren in 2011/12 but made a huge improvement in his game, becoming more mature at Hibs, and he’s now very important to Aston Villa.
“It’s the same story with Ryan Fraser.
“He was educated at Aberdeen and is now having a great career in England.
“He’s a great team player, with speed. He’s going to be very useful for Newcastle and for Steve with Scotland.
“Stuart Armstrong went from Dundee United to Celtic and is now so important to my old club, Southampton.
“He’s box-tobox, very reliable and an intelligent player.
“And also Callum McGregor. Back in 2011, he was in Billy Stark’s Under-19 side.
“He’s developed year on year to become a key player at Celtic.”
